Parapsychology

Parapsychology is the study and research in the scientific basis of the various aspects of the psychic phenomena such as the metaphysical, the psi or the psychic, the divination, world of spirits, extra sensory perceptionpsychokinesis, the paranormal occurrences and so on..

While the metaphysical phenomenon remains hidden from the eyes, the paranormal phenomenon, being besides, unusual or beyond the normal, cannot be easily explained in terms of everyday understanding and knowledge.

Paranormal phenomena may occur both at mental and physical levels. Mental phenomena may include the extra sensory perception, telepathy, clairvoyance and clairsentience, psychometry, precognition, premonition, remote viewing and so on. The physical phenomena may consist of psychokinesis, physical mediumship, healing, levitation, thoughtography, psychic photography and so on.

The term ‘parapsychology’ was first coined and published  by the psychologist Max Dessoir around 1889 in the German magazine Sphinx to replace earlier term "psychical research".

Joseph Banks Rhine, an American parapsychologist (1895-1980) conducted a series of psi experiments at the Duke University. A Rhine Research Center was established to study and do research primarily on the subject of extrasensory perception (ESP), psychokinesis, remote viewing, and astral projection and provide statistical evidence. Americans scholars Charles Tart and Raymond Moody are furthering the Rhine research.

There are numerous magazines and journals including the European Journal of Parapsychology which are devoted to the publication of the study and research work being done in parapsychology in various laboratories and universities across the world. Notable among these are the Society for Psychical Research in London which was established in 1882, the Maimonides Hospital Dream Laboratory in Brooklyn, New York, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research lab; the University of Virginia Division of Perceptual Studies, and the University of Edinburgh, whose psychology department has the Koestler Chair of Parapsychology.

The CBI, the CIA and the US military have hired many parapsychologists to avail of the benefits of research in the filed of parapsychology. Parapsychologists such as Dean Radin have lauded the strong evidence of psychokinesis provided by the research work done at the University.
