Teenagers Turn to Psychics

Less than half of young Australians believe in God, but a growing number are turning towards tarot readers and psychics for answers.

A new study has revealed less than 50 per cent of Australia's Generation Y identify with a traditional religion, while tarot readers and psychics are riding the wave of youth demand.

A large number of Victorian parents are now hiring professional card readers and fortune tellers to appear at their children's 18th and 21st birthday parties.

The Spirit of Generation Y by Monash and Australian Catholic Universities and the Christian Research Association, revealed many are happy to dabble in alternative spiritual practices.

Melbourne-based psychic Jacquelene Close Moore said rising demand led to her conducting many teenage party readings in the past year.

"I have also been at 21sts where I have had more than 100 people line up," Ms Close Moore said.

Most young people are looking for advice on careers, relationships and spirituality, she said. Teenagers must be at least 18 years old to see a psychic.

President of the Tarot Guild of Australia Linda Marson said card-reading had become very popular among teenagers.

"It is great young people are wanting to get in touch with their spirituality, whichever way they do it," Ms Marson said.
