Researchers recorded the electrical rhythms of the brain using EEG and compared two groups of women in Brazil: self-identified mediums from Spiritist centers and matched non-mediums engaged in silent prayer. Rather than focusing on single brain spots, the team examined functional networks—the way different regions synchronize with one another across time.

When the mediums entered a spoken “psychophonic” trance, their brain networks shifted. The EEG showed heightened synchronization, particularly in the slower delta and theta frequencies. There were also changes to alpha-band connectivity focused in the left hemisphere, a region typically tied to language. By contrast, the control participants—who listened and prayed silently—did not display these same connectivity changes, showing only modest shifts in faster beta rhythms. The pattern suggests a distinct, non-pathological altered state of consciousness during the alleged mediumship experience, at least within the scope of this small sample.

It is fascinating to see language-linked networks reconfigure while a person speaks in trance, as if the usual scaffolding of expression is being used in an unusual way. Slow-wave synchronization can accompany deep focus, inwardness, and transitions in awareness—features many people recognize from meditation, prayer, or moments of profound intuition. These limitations do not negate the findings; they simply remind us that first looks should be followed by second and third ones.

When asked about the situation of Jaime’s pet, Plugh’s psychic abilities reveal that the dog plunged into a body of water and was recovered by someone in a military uniform. She further reveals that the dog is still alive. This prediction has given Jaime a lot of hope of finally recovering her pet as she has already spent a fortune trying to locate her “child.”
