Beyond Earth: Why Consciousness May Not Belong to Humans Alone

What if consciousness is not an Earth-bound accident but a pattern the universe repeats in many forms? A new UC Riverside report on a working paper by philosopher Eric Schwitzgebel and Jeremy Pober invites this possibility, arguing that awareness is probably not restricted to carbon-based, terrestrial life. Rather than trying to pin down a perfect definition of consciousness, the authors take a pragmatic path: treat it as real and recognizable, then ask whether it must be tied to our specific biology. Their answer leans toward no, proposing a Copernican principle of consciousness—our biochemical makeup is unlikely to be uniquely privileged.

The authors draw on the idea of substrate flexibility, the notion that mental phenomena could, in principle, arise in very different materials and conditions. If thought, feeling, and experience are patterns that can be implemented in multiple ways, then the stage on which they play out need not be protein and water alone. In line with this, the paper estimates that, at some point in the vast history of the cosmos, at least 1,000 behaviorally sophisticated extraterrestrial civilizations have likely existed. With so many opportunities for complexity to bloom, it becomes implausible—though not disproven—that consciousness would only ever emerge in creatures like us.

UCR News notes that the authors remain careful: this isn’t a claim of proof for alien minds. It is a reframing of likelihoods that nudges us to widen our intuitions. In everyday life, our awareness feels intimately tied to breath, heartbeat, and memory. Yet intuition can evolve—astronomy taught us that Earth wasn’t the cosmic center, and neuroscience keeps revealing that what feels central may be one expression among many. In this light, curiosity becomes a disciplined form of openness: we can respect the mystery of experience without confining it to a single recipe of atoms.

The paper also touches on artificial intelligence. Schwitzgebel is somewhat open to future silicon consciousness, while Pober is more skeptical about current hardware. For the rest of us, the takeaway is not to declare machines sentient or to anoint distant civilizations with certainty, but to engage the question with grounded wonder. If consciousness can, in principle, take root beyond Earth-like life, then our own moments of awareness—our hunches, insights, and quiet inner witnesses—may be kin to a broader tapestry. We don’t need final answers to feel the weight of that possibility; we need care, clarity, and a willingness to let the universe be larger than our habits of thought.

She further says that the information she can give a pet owner is bound with what God, the Guardian Angels and her Spirit Guides allow her to give. These are the information her psychic abilities allow her to receive.

When asked about the situation of Jaime’s pet, Plugh’s psychic abilities reveal that the dog plunged into a body of water and was recovered by someone in a military uniform. She further reveals that the dog is still alive. This prediction has given Jaime a lot of hope of finally recovering her pet as she has already spent a fortune trying to locate her “child.”
