A peer‑reviewed study published on June 5, 2026 in Scientific Reports offers a grounded look at this question through the lens of severe COVID‑19 survivors. Three months after leaving intensive care in Strasbourg, France, 59 patients underwent psychiatric interviews and completed standardized questionnaires. Using the Greyson Near‑Death Experience Scale (with a score of 7 or more indicating an NDE), researchers identified near‑death experiences in 12 participants—20.3% of the group. These encounters with the brink were not merely curiosities; they were strongly linked with higher levels of post‑traumatic growth, a measure of positive psychological change after adversity.

The study’s picture is nuanced. Formal PTSD diagnoses were rare (3.4%), yet those with higher PTSD symptom levels, more intense and intrusive memories of hospitalization, and a stronger sense that the ordeal had become “central” to their life story also showed greater post‑traumatic growth. In other words, the very features that can make recovery challenging may also, for some, catalyze a search for meaning, new priorities, or deeper appreciation—especially when an NDE is part of the narrative. The authors suggest that identifying NDEs and offering appropriate psychological support could help people integrate these experiences and potentially improve post‑ICU recovery and well‑being.

For readers drawn to the mysteries of consciousness, these findings do not resolve what an NDE “is,” but they clarify what an NDE can do. Without making medical or metaphysical claims, the data indicate that a significant minority of people who come close to death report experiences that correlate with growth in the aftermath. Intuition often tells us that the most difficult passages of life demand a story that can hold them. This research suggests that when people name their experiences—including near‑death moments—those stories may support reorientation rather than only distress.

When survivors speak of vivid hospital memories, intrusive images, or a moment that felt like it stood outside ordinary life, it may help to honor those accounts and, when appropriate, guide them toward supportive care. The study—received in November 2025, accepted in May 2026, and published open access in Scientific Reports—shows that growth and struggle can coexist, and that the way an event becomes central to our identity can shape what follows. We cannot force transformation, but we can create conditions where it is more likely: careful assessment, compassionate validation, and room for mystery alongside evidence. She further reveals that the dog is still alive. This prediction has given Jaime a lot of hope of finally recovering her pet as she has already spent a fortune trying to locate her “child.”
