Zodiac literally means a complete circuit or a circle of the principal planets such as the sun and moon and other celestial bodies symbolized by animals in astrology. Both circle and animals are important constituents of the zodiac as understood in Astrology. A zodiac is like a circular belt in the sky, about 15 degrees wide across which the planets move in a certain geometrical pattern. The zodiac is the plane of the ecliptic for the movement of the sun.

An astrologer divides the circle of the ecliptic of 360 degrees into twelve parts, each part being of 30 degrees. Each part is called a sign in the astrological terminology. Most of the signs have animals as their symbols.
